Re-open a World of Opportunities
ANREV Young Professionals Working Group is pleased to let you know the 2023 Young Professionals Conference is successfully held on Friday 13th October in Tokyo. This conference, centered around the theme "Re-open a World of Opportunities", brought together over 60 professionals who shared a common interest. The event took place at the Hotel Villa Fontaine, offered a conducive environment for engaging and networking with peers in the industry, as well as senior management team from key players. The event hosted a good mix of panel discussion, presentations and networking opportunity.
The Young Professionals Conference featured a diverse range of activities including panel discussions, presentation, and ample networking opportunities. Participants can look forward to gaining valuable insights and building connections throughout the event.
Additionally, we are pleased to see the site tour of the magnificent Haneda Airport Garden by Savills IM and Sumitomo RD went very well. This tour encompassed the hotel, conference space, and retail areas, providing a unique and immersive experience.

Speakers
Tony Charles is a Managing Director of Morgan Stanley and Global Head of Research and Strategy for MSREI. Tony is responsible for conducting research on the global real estate markets to identify new products and investment opportunities designed to meet clients' investment goals. With his research team, he develops quarterly global macroeconomic, property sector and capital markets updates. Tony is also a member of the various real estate investment committees and the valuation committee. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Tony led the Research and Strategy function for GE Capital’s real estate business, and was senior strategy manager in the financial services practice at Accenture. Tony received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance from the Securities Institute of Australia.
Elysia Tse is the Head of Asia Pacific Research & Strategy for LaSalle Investment Management. She returned to LaSalle in 2016. Elysia was previously the Head of Investment Governance, Strategy & Research Asia Pacific for Aviva Investors and subsequently the Head of Research and Strategy for J.P. Morgan Asset Management – Real Estate Asia Pacific (as part of the M&A). Before returning to Asia, Elysia has over a decade of experience in real estate investment research and strategy in the U.S. She has held positions in real estate research and strategy teams at BlackRock based in New York and LaSalle based in Chicago. Elysia started her career in Hong Kong in 1998. She holds a B.S. from Xiamen University and a Master’s degree in Real Estate from Cornell University. In 2011, Elysia was named a Rising Leader by Commercial Property Executive in the U.S. She sits on the Advisory Board of Cornell University Baker Program in Real Estate.
Fumihito is based in Hong Kong and joined Manulife in June 2021. He is responsible for sourcing investments in Asia and currently focused on Japan investments and asset management.
He has over 19 years of experience in real estate investment in Asia. Prior to joining Manulife, he worked for M3 capital partners and Composition Capital Partners in Hong Kong. He started his career at a Japanese fund management company and worked in Japan and Germany. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Waseda University.
Jonathan is a global citizen, having held senior executive and board roles across Asia and Europe in real estate, venture capital, technology and infrastructure related investments.
In 2015 Jonathan jointly founded Taronga Ventures with a focus on real estate, venture capital, technology and fund management across Asia. The business was designed to bridge the gap between institutional and corporate owners of real estate and the emerging growth companies that are now targeting the real estate and built environment sectors. In 2018 Real Tech Ventures – Asia’s first VC Fund focused on investing into Real Estate technology was launched and the fund has commenced investing with a focus on investments that address carbon reduction, renewable energy and sustainability, health and safety as well as affordable housing.
Jonathan has also held executive roles at Mirvac, as a Director at AREIM in Sweden and as the Portfolio Manager Asia for the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) during a period when ADIA completed more than 40 transactions across Asia. In other roles Jonathan has lived and worked in China, the Philippines and Singapore with Savills and was also the Managing Director South East Asia based in Singapore for ING Real Estate. In addition to English, Jonathan speaks Mandarin and Swedish.
He joined Global Logistic Properties Inc. (presently, GLP Japan Inc.) in 2016. After serving as the Head of Fund management in Japan, he was appointed as the President of GLP Japan Advisors Inc. in 2019.
Prior to joining GLP, he worked at Nippon Life Insurance Company (“NLI”) where he was engaged in overseas financing and global real estate investments. After being involved in arrangement of APAC syndicated loans and Samurai bond issuance while stationed in Hong Kong, he served as the Head of Real estate investments at NLI’s investment subsidiary in New York, managing NLI’s global real estate portfolio including Class A office buildings and private real estate funds across the U.S. and Europe. He was then transferred to Nissay Asset Management Corporation, NLI’s asset management arm,
where he served as the Head of the Corporate Planning Office, where he was involved in the formulation of its asset management strategies.
He graduated with a B.A. from Waseda University and holds ARES Certified Master and Certified Member of Analyst of SAAJ.
Michael is a Director within StepStone’s real estate team, based in Singapore. StepStone Real Estate has $184 billion in assets under management (“AUM”) and assets under advisement (“AUA”) and invests in real estate funds, secondaries, recapitalizations and co-investments through discretionary comingled funds, separately managed accounts, and on behalf of clients through advisory relationships. StepStone Real Estate is part of the StepStone Group which, in addition to real estate, includes significant private equity, infrastructure, and private debt practices. StepStone has over $600 billion in AUA and AUM and nearly 1,000 professionals worldwide.
Prior to joining StepStone in 2021, Michael served as Director at CBRE Capital Advisors, CBRE’s internal placement agent business, in Hong Kong. Previously, Michael was with Courtland Partners Ltd., an international real estate advisory firm which integrated with StepStone Real Estate. Mr. Humphrey received his JD from the University of North Carolina School of Law and his BA from Washington and Lee University.
Charles is a Director within the Client Solutions Group at Macquarie Asset Management, based in Singapore, and is responsible for spearheading capital raising in Asia Pacific for MAM’s Real Estate funds and underlying ventures, as well as the development of new real estate products in the region. MAM Real Estate is a global business with approx. US$15bn of assets under management invested across 19 markets. Prior to joining Macquarie, Charles spent four years at Savills Investment Management in Singapore, focused on capital raising and new product development across Asia Pacific. Charles has a broad background in the global real estate industry, having also worked at Aetos Capital Real Estate, a NY-based private equity fund, and starting his career in Beijing and Hong Kong at JLL and Cushman & Wakefield. Charles has a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School. Outside of real estate, his interests include adventuring with family around Southeast Asia, speaking taxi-cab Mandarin, and representing Singapore at international lacrosse tournaments.
Natsuko is a partner in Clifford Chance's Corporate Group and specialises in private M&A, private equity, real estate and cross-border transactions.
She is a solicitor qualified in England and Wales, and advises Japanese clients on outbound M&A transactions as well as international clients on Japan inbound M&A transactions. Natsuko also specialises in advising on corporate aspects of project / infra transactions, as well as fund structures and investment in a range of private funds. Natsuko also leads the Diversity and Inclusion initiatives at Clifford Chance in Tokyo.
Regina is the Head of Property Research, Asia Pacific for M&G Real Estate. Prior to joining M&G she was the Head of strategic advisory, Asia Pacific capital markets in JLL, overseeing transaction intelligence, investment strategy and portfolio allocation. Prior to joining JLL, Regina was the Head of Singapore Equity Research and Head of ASEAN Property at Standard Chartered. She has over nine years of experience covering Singapore listed developers and SREITs at UBS and Standard Chartered. From 1998 to 2006, she worked for Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority, where she undertook property research, land sales policy and planning policy studies. Regina graduated from Oxford University with a Masters in Engineering, Economics and Management.
Amélie Delaunay is the Senior Director of Research and Professional Standards for ANREV, the Asian association for investors in non-listed real estate vehicles where she leads a team of five, responsible for the development and implementation of ANREV’s Research, Market information and Professional Standards programmes in Asia Pacific, including ANREV indices, global surveys and promotion of best practices for the industry.
Amélie has more than 20 years of experience in the real estate industry and a strong real estate consulting background initially with Ernst & Young. She has been based in Asia since 2006.
Educated at the Sorbonne in Paris, where she was awarded a post graduate degree in Urban Geography, Town Planning and Real Estate, Amélie also has an Advanced Master's Degree in Urban and Real Estate Management from ESSEC Business School in Paris. Amélie is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
Yuki Nishiyama is a member of the Capability Specialists team for the Real Estate & Private Markets business, part of UBS Asset Management (UBS-AM). Yuki joined UBS-AM in July, 2019, and is based in Japan. She currently plays an active role doing performance reporting updates and RFP for both existing and potential clients.
Before her current position with UBS, Yuki spent several years in the Finance team at DWS based in Tokyo, focused on regional management and regulatory reporting. Prior to this, she worked at SMBC Nikko Securities , handling the launching of new mutual funds for retail investors and performing enhanced marketing activities.
Yuki is a CMA (Certificate-holder Member of the Securities Analysts Association of Japan).
Wako Toyama serves as the Senior Manager at GLP Capital Partners Japan, where she is accountable for managing fund, including overseeing performance and underwriting acquisition projects for the Japan Income Fund, an open end fund managed by GLP.
Since joining GLP in 2019, she has been in charge of Japan Development Venture I and was responsible for restructuring the fund. Before joining GLP, she worked for the Real Estate Development division at Mitsui & Co, in charge of logistics facility development in South East Asia based in Singapore.
Wako holds a Bachelor's degree in Law from Tohoku University and is a certified public accountant registered with the Guam Board of Accountancy.
Charles Haase became Chief Executive of ANREV in 2022. Before joining ANREV, Haase was responsible for global client relationship management with Aetos Japan, LLC. Prior to that he was with Tokyu Fudosan Holdings Corporation in Tokyo, working on overseas investments for Tokyu Land Corporation and on inbound investment for Tokyu Livable, Inc. Before coming to Tokyo, Haase was a real estate investment officer with the California State Teachers' Retirement System, and served on the economics faculty at San Francisco State University. Haase has a Ph.D. in economics from University of California at Davis.
Augustus Set is a Director in the Multi-Managers Real Estate Asia Pacific investment team (MMRE APAC), a business which forms part of Real Estate & Private Markets wihin UBS Asset Management (UBS-AM).
His team actively invests in a wide range of unlisted real estate, operated either UBS or third-party managers, primarily on behlaf of institutional investors globally.
In his role, Augustus is involved in the underwriting, investment and monitoring of investments for MMRE mandates and segregated accounts. He is also involved in client reporting and relationship management, as well as business development and capital raising initiatives. In additon, he takes care of the research and analysis of APAC markets for potential investments, and serves on the MMRE Sustainability Working Group.
Prior to jioning the MMRE APAC team, he joined UBS as part of the Graduate Talent Program (GTP) in 2015. As part of the GTP, he spent time on rotations in FX sales at UBS Investment Bank, MMRE at UBS-AM, and at the Chief Investment Office at UBS Wealth Management.
Chie Kawase is an executive director at PGIM Real Estate and a member of the Asia Pacific Business Development team serving institutional investors in Japan. Based in Tokyo, Chie is responsible for client relationship management and capital raising for PGIM Real Estate’s global products across real estate, agriculture, and impact, as well as Montana Capital Partners – a PGIM-owned global private equity secondaries manager.
Before joining PGIM Real Estate, Chie was chief investment officer at GLP J-REIT, one of the largest Japanese listed industrial REITs and responsible for portfolio management, asset management and transactions. She also played a key role in initial public offering of the REIT in 2012 and 6 follow-on equity offerings since then.
Prior to that, Chie was responsible for launching a global brand and developing new products in Japan at several global companies. She started her career as business analyst at A.T. Kearney where she was engaged in various consulting projects.
Chie has a bachelor’s degree in economics from University of Tokyo and master of business administration from INSEAD
in France.
Derek works as the Lead Consultant APAC at AXA Climate to bring AXA’s risk expertise onto the topics of climate and nature and advise private markets financial institutions, corporates and non-profits in the APAC region. At AXA Climate, we aim to utilise our insurer DNA and scientific expertise to enable climate-resilient and regenerative businesses.
Derek has supported clients to navigate the increasing scrutiny and uncertainty posed by climate change, including climate and nature risk assessments and due diligences, fund/ portfolio companies' climate and net-zero strategy development and ESG training and engagements. He is also experienced in working with the real estate sector across APAC from a strategy and risk management lens across the ESG spectrum. Prior to AXA Climate, Derek worked at a global sustainability strategy and insights consultancy advising management and operational teams on regional ESG trends and opportunities. He has an environmental management background and is based in Hong Kong.
Outside of work, he is an avid scuba-diver and mountain climber, which you will find him either out in the wild or planning for his next big expedition.
Ms. Lau is a Managing Director in the Ares Secondaries Group, where she focuses on real estate secondaries. Prior to joining Ares in 2022, she was a Senior Portfolio Manager at Hong Kong Monetary Authority, where she led the Asia real estate acquisition and portfolio management. Previously, Ms. Lau was a Director at Aetos Capital Real Estate, where she was responsible for Asia ex-Japan investments and asset management. In addition, Ms. Lau was an Analyst at Morgan Stanley's Real Estate Investing business. She holds a B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University in Business Administration.
Eric Huang is a Vice President of Hodes Weill & Associates in the Hong Kong office, responsible for coverage of institutional investors in Greater China as well as project management of client mandates in the Asia Pacific region.
Previously, Mr. Huang was a Vice President at LaSalle Investment Management where he has worked extensively in different disciplines of real estate investment management including portfolio management, investor relations and product management. Prior to LaSalle Investment Management, Mr. Huang was a manager in PricewaterhouseCoopers, providing assurance and M&A transaction services across a wide range of industries.
Mr. Huang holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (“CFA”) designation, and he is also a Certified Public Accountant (“CPA”) in Hong Kong and mainland China, respectively. Mr. Huang received a BBA in Professional Accountancy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Mr. Huang serves as the chair in ANREV’s Young Professionals Working Group and is a member of ULI’s Young Leaders Committee.
Mr. Kim is an Executive Director of Phoenix’s Japan Investment Team and has been with the firm since 2019. Prior to joining Phoenix, he was with Partners Group, based in Singapore, where he focused on real estate acquisitions across Asia and served on the global real estate private equity fund of over USD 10 billion in assets under management. Prior to that, he was with Aetos’ acquisitions team focusing on opportunistic investments in Japan. Mr. Kim started his career in the investment banking division at J.P. Morgan in New York.
Mr. Kim holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Minor in Psychology from Stanford University.
Mr Nelson is a Managing Director, Head of Research and Strategy in the Asia Pacific region and a Portfolio Manager of the Asia Pacific Real Estate Fund. He is a member of the AEW Asia Investment and Risk Management Committees and a member of the firm’s Global Securities Allocation Committee. Mr Nelson has over 20 years of real estate experience in the Asia Pacific region. Prior to joining AEW, he served as Head of Asia Pacific Property Research for Aberdeen Asset Management and as Head of Real Estate Intelligence for Jones Lang LaSalle. He is a graduate of University of Auckland and University of Texas at Arlington (M.S. in Real Estate).
Hideki joined IDERA as its Head of Acquisitions in 2023.
Hideki has some 28 years of working experience in the real estate industry spanning sell-side advisory and investment management. Prior to joining IDERA, he was the head of Japan capital markets at Colliers and deputy head at JLL where he had led several landmark transactions in Japan for foreign institutional investors including LaSalle, PAG, Goldman Sachs. He started his career in the corporate and real estate investment banking side, working for Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Citibank and Merrill Lynch.
Hideki received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at Kelley School of Business from Indiana University Bloomington.
He is a licensed real estate appraiser.
Paul is a Senior Director, Co-Lead of International Clients in JLL’s Japan Capital Markets team. Paul is responsible for providing investment and structuring advice to international investors on major real estate transactions in Japan.
